How to Get The Best Domain Name!

You may feel that all the "good" .COM names are taken. Well, you can still get a great domain name by getting a little creative! Here are some tips that will help you snatch up the perfect name for you!

1) Add Small Words Before and After the Name

  • For information sites, add 101 at the end of the domain. (i.e. BakingTutorials101.com)
  • Add the word best or top (i.e. BestCrochetAdvice.com)
  • Adding online works with almost any name (i.e. MagnificentRecipesOnline.com)

2)Take Advantage of Other Domain Extensions/Endings

Many of the .COM versions of the domain you want may be taken, but look for other extensions...

  • .CO is great for company websites
  • .INFO is fabulous for information websites and much cheaper than other extensions (PikesPeakTravel.INFO)
  • .ME is ideal for personal websites (YourName.ME)
  • Get a .BIZ domain to brand your business (WebsitesForMoney.BIZ)

NOTE: You may be hesitant to register anything other than a .COM or .NET name, but here are the facts. As the Internet grows, more and more extensions will become available and people will have no choice but to register them because it's getting harder and harder to find the desired .COM or .NET names.

Right now there are still a LOT of excellent names available for the other extensions. So you better grab them now before people begin to realize why these names will become more valuable as time goes on.

It's also a myth that only .COM names rank best in the engines. Any domain can rank well with the proper search engine optimization and popularity.

3) Don't Be Afraid to Make Up Words (Within Reason)

In order to have a short, brandable name, companies make up words all the time. This can actually work when the made-up word accompanies a real word.

For example, say you are starting a web design company and you want the word "website" in your domain name, but all the common two-word phrases are taken. You could register something like WebsiteZabba.com. Even though it includes a made-up name, it's short and can be memorable with great branding.

4) Just Add an "S"

In some cases, it may help to use the plural form of words. This may not always make sense with your concept, but it may work in some instances.

More Tips for Getting a Good Domain

  • Try to keep your name to three words or less (Two is ideal.)
  • Don't use hyphens unless your name is very long and hard to read (Should be a last resort!)
  • Don't misspell words just to get the domain name you want. People may forget how to spell your name.
  • Don't use numbers in place of words (i.e. Domains4Sale) It may be hard for people to remember it's a "4" instead of "for".
  • Try to get your major keywords in your domain for search engine optimization purposes.
